Starting a business in Hull

Why the UK’s 2017 Capital of Culture is a great place to start your business this year

As the 2017 UK Capital of Culture, Hull is a prime place to start a business this year. Home to a number of museums of national importance and the birthplace of some of theatre’s finest actors and writers, Kingston upon Hull is the creative Yorkshire city that start-ups are beginning to take note of.

Surge in tourism

Since claiming the 2017 City of Culture Award, AccorHotels.com has reported a 50% increase in hotel bookings for the first six months of 2017 compared with the previous year. Attractions like The Deep – Hull’s contemporary landmark aquarium and centre for marine research – and the cobbled Georgian Museums Quarter entice visitors to the city from around the UK and farther afield.

It’s great news for the city, as those additional one million visitors are expected to bring with them a cool £60 million to plug into the burgeoning local economy.

Multi-million-pound makeover

For the last two years, Hull City Council has been reinventing its city centre in preparation for the 2017 cultural celebrations. Wall-mounted illuminations line restored cobbled streets and 54 new trees have been planted around the city centre to make shopping and working in Hull something to shout about. Since receiving its coveted title, a total of 350 new jobs have been created for local people across the city.

Free public Wi-Fi throughout the city

Business owners and local people alike will be pleased to know that Hull’s recent makeover is more than just a nip and a tuck.

As well as sprucing the place up, Hull City Council has rolled out free public Wi-Fi throughout the city to help businesses and visitors stay connected. Users will get 50Mb of free access a day, whilst offering unlimited access to those who can’t access paid-for broadband connections. What’s more, launching alongside the network is Hello Hull – a website with information about bars, clubs restaurants and events around the city.

Support for new businesses

City councillors in Hull have made attracting and retaining new and exciting businesses a priority.
