Baby Price Boom – BT use Royal Baby to bury bad news of price increases

BT could face industry criticism for burying news of price increases to coincide with the birth of the Royal baby. This is not the first time BT have tucked away their price increases in the shadow of a national event.

In 2011, BT’s 9% increase in UK landline call charges was announced during the Royal Wedding bank holiday. “It seems all too opportune that BT have announced an increase in their already ‘heir raising’ prices at a point when the world’s attention is on the birth of the Royal baby.
BT know that this week and beyond the press will be swamped by pictures and stories of the Royal family,” said James Wilson, Marketing Director of XLN Business Services. BT have increased their line installation by 7% and their business broadband (unlimited) and business package prices by 6%. Customers will have no choice but to pay these increases for their broadband connection and phone line – or they will look to to other providers. “At a time when small businesses are struggling, these price increases will be another blow for our heroes of the UK economy.

XLN now undercut BT by as much as 40% which can be the difference between success and failure for many struggling companies,” James Wilson continues.
