What to do if you have faulty broadband

Find out what to do if you’re having problems with your broadband.

When your business depends on reliable broadband, it can be more than a little inconvenient if things go wrong. But there’s no need to panic if you’re experiencing issues getting online. Our guide tells you what to do if you have faulty broadband.

Check the router

First things first, check your router to see if the fault lies with the source. It sounds cliché, but try turning it off and then on again – often your router just needs a little wake-up to get things going again. If this doesn’t solve the issue, you might need a new one.

Is there a fault or outage in your area?

Check your broadband coverage with your provider to see if there’s a major fault in the area that isn’t just affecting you. If you can connect to the Internet with your mobile data then you can do this online. If this is the case, you’ll most likely have to wait it out.

Double check for loose cables

It might sound fairly obvious, but check for loose cables and wires connecting to your router. This is a quick fix – if you find any, just plug them back in securely.

Check your microfilters

Connecting anything to your phone line requires a properly installed microfilter. You need to use a microfilter to connect your broadband line to your phone socket, and in some cases these can be faulty.

To check if this is causing the issue, disconnect every item of equipment that’s connected to your line and then one-by-one plug them back in, checking your broadband connection each time. By process of elimination, you should be able to discover which item is causing the fault.

Make sure your line is connected to the master socket

Broadband doesn’t work well when extension wires come into play, and we always advise that you connect your line directly via the master socket. The master socket is usually located close to the point where your phone line enters your premises.
