Small businesses encouraged to lead the charge to net zero carbon

The government’s new campaign focuses on how SMEs can go green and lead the charge to net zero carbon

The government has launched a new campaign, Together for our Planet, which encourages all small businesses to pledge to cut their emissions to net zero by 2050 or sooner.

It also encourages them to cut their emissions by half by 2030.

This represents a fantastic opportunity for both the UK’s environmental goals and the 6 million small businesses across the country.

Practical steps in the right direction

At the heart of the campaign is the UK’s new Business Climate Hub.

This resource provides lots of practical tools and tips on how you can cut your emissions. Importantly, it also provides the opportunity for small businesses to access support from big businesses and various climate experts.

Any business that commits to net zero carbon will be officially recognised by the United Nations Race to Zero campaign.

What’s good for the planet is good for business

The climate crisis the planet faces simply cannot be overestimated.

And small businesses have a huge role to play.

Making up 99% of UK enterprise and 60% of all employees, the small business footprint is significant. The climate crisis can no longer be considered someone else’s problem. It’s our problem – and that goes for every person, and every business of every size.

But beyond our responsibility to the planet, going green now makes inarguable business sense too.

There’s a vast body of evidence showing how consumers are making buying decisions based on the environmental credentials of businesses. Buyers are increasingly avoiding brands that aren’t sustainable, and spending more with those who are.

And this trend is most strongly felt among younger demographics.

Put simply, cutting your emissions will protect the future of your business in more ways than one.

So, wherever your environmental plans are, start planning your net zero carbon strategy today. Because time is running out.
